Premise:
Upon returning to Gaul after conquering Britain in the autumn of 54 BC Roman commander-and-chief Julius Caesar was faced with a crisis.

Due to a lack of grain he was forced to site the winter camps of his legions more widely throughout northern Gaul than he would otherwise have chosen.

The political situation was tense in Roman-ruled Gaul and rebellion flared up led by Ambiorix, chief of the Eburones.

In the confusion of subterfuge from Ambiorix and his tribe, a substantial Roman force and its commanders were wiped out. For the first time the Gauls were shown that Rome was not invincible, and this incited more rebellions.

Elated at his victory and having more tribes ally with him, Ambiorix marched west for a Roman stronghold of Cicero that had not heard any news about their comrades being slaughtered. In that legion there were two outstandingly brave individuals, Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus, both centurions of the senior grade.

They were always arguing about which of them was the superior soldier, and every year they vied with one another for promotion. The siege at Cicero will be no different for these two rivals as they valiantly fight against the enemy to prove who is the better of the two once and for all.
